ABSTRACT
Background & Objectives: Several studies have investigated the relationship between lipoprotein profile and the risk of cardiovascular diseases in the hypothyroidism. Recently non-HDL-C has emerged as a predictor of CVD. However, the use of non-HDL levels have been suggested as a better tool for risk assessment than the LDL-C levels. The present study objective was to find out the relation between N-HDL cholesterol levels and a risk factor of cardiovascular disease in hypothyroid patients. Methods: The study was done with known history of hypothyroidism patients. A total of 80 (cases 55, control, 25) hypothyroid patients with age and gender matched were taken as a control. Lipid profile, including N-HDL-C levels and thyroid profile were analyzed with standard protocols. Results: Lipid profile, including Non HDL-C and ratios of Non HDL-C/HDL-C, TC/HDL-C and LDL-C/HDL-C and TSH levels were observed higher, whereas HDL-C and T4 were noticed lower in hypothyroid patients than the control group with a high statistical (p<0.0001) significance. Interpretation & Conclusion: We concluded that the Non-HDL-C should be estimated with other lipid parameters as a useful index for measuring the cardiac risk in hypothyroid patients.
Key-words: Hypothyroidism, Lipid profile, N-HDL-C, Total T4 and TSH.
