ABSTRACT

Background: Identification is recognition of an individuality of a person, by means of various physical features and biological parameters that defines an individual. In various civil and criminal medicolegal cases, the person’s age determination has vital importance. Age estimation by cranial suture closure is a very old method. We tried to reanalyze it by using the new method, i.e. CT scan head. Objectives: To study the normal physiological pattern of closure of the coronal suture with relation to age of the person. To detect bilateral and bisexual variations. Materials & Methods: We had done a descriptive cross-sectional study by the CT scan, head of 130 living adult persons. We analyzed them for closure status of Coronal suture in co-relation to their age. Results: Lower half of the coronal suture close completely at 40 to 64 years and upper half close later at 45 to 74 years in both sexes. Upper half of the Coronal suture showed delayed or lapsed union in some subjects. Conclusion: Ectocranially the suture closure of lambdoid suture occurs in late fifties & sixties. The upper part of suture showed lapsed union in a few subjects. There is no significant bilateral variation in cranial suture closure within specific age range.

Key-words: Identity, Age estimation, Adult, Coronal suture, CT scan.
