ABSTRACT

Background: Identi?cation is recognition of an individuality of a person, by means of various physical features and biological parameters. In various civil and criminal medicolegal cases, the person's age determination has vital importance. Age estimation by cranial suture closure is a very old method. We tried to reanalyze it by using the new method, i.e. CT scan head. Objectives: To study the pattern of closure of Sagittal & Basioccipitalbasisphenoid suture with relation to age of the person. To detect bilateral and bisexual variations in cranial suture closure. Materials & Methods: We had done a descriptive crosssectional study by CT scan, head of 130 living adult persons and analyzed them for closure status of sagittal & Basioccipital-basisphenoid suture in co-relation to age. Results: Basioccipital-basisphenoid suture closed completely in 17 to 25 years in female and 15 to 29 years in males. In case of sagittal suture, anterior 1/3rd part close in majority of subjects at 40 to 69 years in male and at 51 to 64 years in female. Middle 1/3rd part close in majority at 40 to 49 years in male and at 35 to 49 years in female. Conclusion: Cranial suture closure is yet a fair criteria for age estimation of an adult person.
